{"id":302,"date":"2015-05-01T22:07:24","date_gmt":"2015-05-02T03:07:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lostpineslife.com\/?p=302"},"modified":"2015-05-02T14:24:24","modified_gmt":"2015-05-02T19:24:24","slug":"gophers-fire-ants-and-poison-ivy-part-ii-but-lets-add-chiggers-and-call-in-reinforcements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lostpineslife.com\/?p=302","title":{"rendered":"Gophers, fire ants, and poison ivy, Part II (But let&#8217;s add chiggers and call in reinforcements)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Gopher, fire ant, and poison ivy offensive foiled by rain<\/h2>\n<p>The true story follow-up to Part I of this post is that my plan got almost completely rained out. \u00a0After the rain fell all morning, and I allowed a few hours for drying time, all I managed to do was spray some poison ivy with Round Up, and hit a few ant mounds \u00a0with Amdro along the way. \u00a0Unfortunately, the rain fell again that night, and hardly any of the herbicide had time to take effect. \u00a0The ants are an ongoing battle but at least they seem to be retreating.<\/p>\n<p>While the rain continued for days, postponing my tasks, a long anticipated vacation came around, and we left for 2 weeks. \u00a0Little Piney was loved and \u00a0visited \u00a0by friends and family who monitored the nest boxes and looked out for things, and they all told us how green it was out there!<\/p>\n<p>On our return it was <em>green <\/em>all right&#8211; like a jungle! \u00a0Little Piney was lush with native grasses, wildflowers, dewberries, and healthy stands of poison ivy all along the lake. \u00a0Still scarred by my last encounter with poison ivy, I was very careful, especially since there was a vulnerable gap between my boots and my shorts. \u00a0I did not think for one minute of the possibility that it was time for chiggers to be out and busy. \u00a0I had forgotten about chiggers, and how badly they itch. \u00a0Now I&#8217;ve been reminded every day for a whole week.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Chiggers<\/h2>\n<p>I researched chiggers to determine what was fact and what was myth. \u00a0When I was growing up we painted nail polish over the bites to kill the chiggers or &#8220;red bugs.&#8221; \u00a0Apparently that was unnecessary because the chigger is usually long gone before the itching starts. \u00a0Chiggers are the larvae of a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.medterms.com\/script\/main\/art.asp?articlekey=25536\" rel=\"DICT\">mite<\/a><\/span>\u00a0of the family Trombiculidae. \u00a0They are arachnids like ticks and spiders. \u00a0These barely visible hairy red mites are found throughout the world and can be traced back to 6th century China. \u00a0According to Wikipedia <span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Trombiculidae mites go through a life cycle of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Egg (biology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Egg_(biology)\">egg<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Larva\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larva\">larva<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Nymph (biology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nymph_(biology)\">nymph<\/a>, and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Adult\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adult\">adult<\/a>.\u00a0The larval mites feed on the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Skin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skin\">skin<\/a>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Cell (biology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cell_(biology)\">cells<\/a>\u00a0of animals [and humans].\u00a0After crawling onto their\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Host (biology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Host_(biology)\">hosts<\/a>, they inject digestive enzymes into the skin that break down skin cells. They do not actually &#8220;bite&#8221; but instead form a hole in the skin called a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Stylostome\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stylostome\">stylostome<\/a>\u00a0and chew up tiny parts of the inner skin, thus causing severe irritation and swelling. The severe itching is accompanied by red,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Pimple\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pimple\">pimple-like<\/a>\u00a0bumps (<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Papule\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Papule\">papules<\/a>) or\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Hives\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hives\">hives<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Skin rash\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skin_rash\">skin rash<\/a>\u00a0or lesions on a sun-exposed area. For humans, itching usually occurs after the larvae detach from the skin.&#8221; \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The best thing to do is to avoid the chiggers as best you can, and if you can&#8217;t wash clothing in hot water and detergent, and shower immediately. \u00a0After the fact, topical creams can help the itching. \u00a0I got the best relief from Sting-eze. The itching actually rivals the poison ivy in intensity.<\/p>\n<h2>Call in reinforcements<\/h2>\n<p>So, we are behind on taming Mother Nature, and can admit when we need help. \u00a0Tomorrow I have reinforcements&#8211;a man with a tractor that works (ours is broken), who knows how to run his tractor (we don&#8217;t), who knows how to fix our tractor (maybe), who will cheerfully and fearlessly spray the poison ivy, and who thinks he can fix whatever we mis-set on our watering troughs for the game! \u00a0And, he is going to mow pathways to the nest boxes so that I can reach them without wading through chigger territory!<\/p>\n<p>If all this happens, he will be Little Piney&#8217;s own super hero.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll learn to run the tractor, eventually. \u00a0I&#8217;ll mark &#8220;chiggers&#8221; on next year&#8217;s calendar as a reminder along with &#8220;poison ivy&#8221; to remind myself of their return. \u00a0We&#8217;ll leave the water valves alone forever after. \u00a0No more spring vacations, ever. \u00a0And I will not go walking through tall grass without insect repellant and long pants again.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_304\"
