Winter birds are plentiful in Bastrop County. I photographed these winter friends in January and February this year, my first two months at Little Piney (our home in Bastrop). \u00a0Of course there are more birds I haven’t captured on film–Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Belted Kingfisher, a Pileated Woodpecker, all kinds of Sparrows, Cardinals flashing red throughout the yaupons and bare oaks. \u00a0Many birds I haven’t identified and some it seems I only hear and never see.<\/p>\n

I am a beginning birder so please feel free to correct me if I have misidentified a bird. \u00a0I’m learning from my bird guides, my iPhone apps and birding friends. \u00a0Cornell’s allaboutbirds.org<\/a>\u00a0is a complete resource for bird identification that I use often. \u00a0\u00a0 A listed of sighted birds in Bastrop Parks is available from Bastrop County Audubon Society<\/a>. \u00a0This lists the birds as well as how frequently they are seen in each season and has a place for checking them off. \u00a0I add the dates, and plan to start a new list each year. \u00a0I have 38 checks so far \u00a0ranging from “common” to “rare”.<\/p>\n
