Fall Seed Planting<\/h3>\n

Fall is a busy season at Little Piney. \u00a0Fall is\u00a0the time to plant wildflower seeds, watch bird migration, and work and play outdoors while the weather is as good as it gets.<\/p>\n

I’ve had my seed packets\u00a0in hand\u00a0for October since spring, but now that planting time is here, it is a challenge to get them in the ground. \u00a0Seed bed preparation is time consuming and hard, especially in the fields. \u00a0With 90\u00ba temperatures persisting into October, working in the sun for hours has been less than appealing.<\/p>\n

Two weeks ago, I decided to start in the backyard with the seed mix for Hummingbirds, and the seed mix for \u00a0butterflies. \u00a0I wanted to create a space for flowers and birds in memory of my bird-and-flower loving mother who died just a year ago this month. \u00a0My husband and kids helped turn the soil and remove the straggling bits of grass and vicious burs that survived the dry summer. \u00a0Even with five shovels working, the soil for the butterfly and hummingbird gardens took a full day to prepare.<\/p>\n

Butterfly and Hummingbird Gardens<\/h3>\n

The butterfly garden takes over a circle of sandy soil in the full sun where the previous owners had an above ground pool.<\/p>\n

Hummingbirds prefer to be near cover so their garden is nestled in a protected corner. \u00a0The iron fence section is for perching and a shallow pink rose Havilland bowl holds water for drinking and bathing. \u00a0Mom loved pink roses.<\/p>\n

The seed is from the Native American Seed Company<\/a> located in Junction, Texas.<\/p>\n
