The Arthropod Series<\/h3>\n

A bright green and yellow spider spinning webs on the Yellow Bells by the gate caught my eye on Saturday morning. \u00a0 That prompted the attachment of a macro lens to my camera, and a hunt in the fields for colorful spiders. \u00a0The successful spider expedition set the arthropod theme for the weekend; highlights include close encounters with a Praying Mantis and a huge and hungry dragonfly.<\/p>\n

The spiders show up in Part III. \u00a0The most cooperative subject, the Praying Mantis gets Part I.<\/p>\n

The Praying Mantis Knocks<\/h3>\n

We don’t have many surprise visitors out at Little Piney,<\/p>\n

but this Praying Mantis<\/a> made it to the front door without the gate code.<\/p>\n

Can an insect be curious about us? \u00a0He seemed friendly and engaged.<\/p>\n

We had to go inside, but Praying Mantis found a way to keep<\/p>\n

track of his new friend, Ken, through the window screen.<\/p>\n

Interesting Facts About the Praying Mantis<\/h3>\n

  • The praying mantis uses those long\u00a0front legs to snatch prey quicker than wink. \u00a0Those\u00a0spikes pin the meal in place so it can’t escape.<\/li>\n
  • The female may eat a male just after mating.<\/li>\n
  • Hundreds of eggs hatch young that are mini versions of mom and dad.<\/li>\n
  • Praying mantis are the most common pet insect.<\/li>\n
