Snowberry Clear Wing Hummingbird Moth

Tammy Brown

Don’t you love it when you have your camera ready with the right lens attached, and along comes a beautiful creature willing to ignore you while you shoot?  That’s what happened this morning when this Hummingbird moth–a Snowberry Clear Wing, to be exact– caught my eye.

Hummingbird moths can hover like their namesake.

They have an extra-long probiscus which rolls out to reach nectar.

The Snowberry Clear Wing Hummingbird Moth looks like a big bumblebee with a crawfish tail and leaded glass wings.

Nest Box Update

Another discovery today–two new nests in the nest boxes, one with 4 speckled Chickadee eggs!  I’m very happy to have another round of baby birds soon to hatch at Little Piney.  I’m hoping the second nest belongs to Eastern Bluebirds and should know if a few days!
